Following a little tweaking of part of scene 8 (or maybe it was 9), I have finally got the drink scene into some sort of pleasing order. Having followed some suggestions by Andy, I had created an eccentric cameo based on his teacher. Feeling a little confined by basing the design too heavily on an existing person, I pulled it away a little and merged some elements from Donovan, one of my characters from an old webcomic of mine, "Number 85". This in itself has really helped to smooth the scene out and make the conversation seem more natural without losing any of the eccentricity.
